'That’s a lot of Cameo recordings': Giuliani roasted on social media after defamation judgment

After former Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani was ordered by an eight-member jury to pay $148 million to two Georgia election workers he defamed, Americans are taking turns ridiculing "America's mayor" on social media.

"That's a lot of Cameo recordings!" Mother Jones DC bureau chief David Corn tweeted, referencing the platform celebrities use to charge users to record personal greetings, as expelled former congressman George Santos has done.

"If you're doing the math at home, that's $37 million for each of the four landscaping seasons," tweeted journalist Holly Anderson, in a callback to Giuliani's widely mocked press conference in front of Four Seasons Total Landscaping in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the days following the 2020 presidential election.

Following the four-day trial, the Washington, DC jury unanimously awarded both Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss tens of millions of dollars apiece in response to the former New York City mayor's defamatory claims about the two former election workers. In December of 2020, Giuliani falsely claimed that the two women were manipulating votes, resulting in both Freeman and Moss — who are Black — receiving a wave of violent and racist threats. Scott Gottlieb, the attorney who represented both plaintiffs, said Giuliani had "no right to offer up defenseless civil servants up to a virtual mob in order to overturn an election."

"Today is a good day. A jury stood witness to what Rudy Giuliani did to me and my daughter," Ruby Freeman said following the announcement of the verdict.

"The lies Rudy Giuliani told about me and my mommy after the 2020 election have changed our lives. The past few years have been devastating," Shaye Moss said.

Others on X (formerly Twitter) were less diplomatic in their remarks about the disgraced former TIME Magazine Person of the Year.

"Rudy Giuliani is about to go through more than just a few things! America’s Mayor is now America’s Shame. A much deserved to comeuppance," X user Russell Drew tweeted. "This $148 million payout is going to break him in every way possible."

"Let that be a lesson to anyone toying with the idea of following in the footsteps of Rudy and his ilk: lying about, endangering, and defaming our nation’s election workers," former federal prosecutor Glenn Kirschner tweeted. "The worm is turning."

Despite the judgment, Giuliani held fast to his false claims about Freeman and Moss, repeating them outside of the courthouse following the verdict. When reporters asked him to produce evidence, Giuliani demurred.

This won't be the former mayor's last time in a courtroom. He still stands to face up to 20 years in prison if convicted on election interference charges in Georgia. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has asked Judge Scott McAfee to set a trial date of August 5, 2024.
