Giuliani hires 'country lawyer' to defend him in Georgia RICO case after weeks without attorney

Former Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani has now retained the services of a small town lawyer from rural Georgia to represent him in his high-stakes RICO case in Fulton County.

L. Allyn Stockton, whom the Wall Street Journal described as a "country lawyer," has been the county attorney for Rabun County, Georgia — which has a population of roughly 16,000 residents — for the past 23 years. The Journal reports he has represented a wide breadth of clients ranging from DUI suspects to death row inmates. Stockton told the publication that despite Giuliani's ongoing financial hardships, the former New York City mayor has agreed to pay him, and that his client will not be accepting any plea deals.

"No offer has been sought, nor is one expected," Stockton said.

Giuliani and more than a dozen other defendants are accused of orchestrating a conspiracy to subvert the will of Georgia voters in the 2020 election. If he is found guilty, he could face up to 20 years in prison. While Stockton said the case won't be a "whodunit" given the abundance of evidence, he still maintains his client's innocence.

“There’s recordings of what they’re accusing them of doing, it’s just going to be whether or not that constitutes a crime. Which, everything I’ve reviewed so far, I just don’t believe it does," Stockton told the Journal.

Stockton's agreement to represent Giuliani is a significant development for the embattled former New York mayor. Giuliani has been without legal representation in the Peach State since early October, when attorney David Wolfe filed a motion to withdraw as counsel. The former personal attorney to Donald Trump has also been sued by other attorneys for failing to pay his legal bills. Giuliani hired longtime friend Robert Costello to defend him in 2019, though Costello's firm has since sued Giuliani for nearly $1.4 million.

A separate lawsuit filed last week by the accounting firm that Giuliani hired to help with his 2019 divorce also accuses the former mayor of not paying for services rendered. That firm — BST & Co. — is seeking $10,000 in compensation for services, along with $25,000 in additional legal costs.
