'George Santos is toast': House GOP now has the votes to expel NY Republican
29 November 2023
After gaveling back into session from the Thanksgiving recess this week, The Republican majority in the House of Representatives now appears to have the votes necessary to expel Rep. George Santos (R-New York) from Congress.
Politico reports that the expulsion vote is likely happening on Thursday, with approximately 90 members of the House GOP signaling that they would be willing to remove their fellow Republican from the body. Assuming all Democrats also vote in favor of expulsion, that would provide the necessary two-thirds majority required by the US Constitution to expel a member.
"George Santos is toast," Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-Montana) told the publication ahead of a meeting.

While Democrats have fielded two motions to expel Santos, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) will likely call the expulsion motion by Rep. Michael Guest (R-Mississippi), who chairs the House Committee on Ethics. Guest's committee published a comprehensive report delving into Santos' pattern of allegedly using his campaign account on frivolous expenditures, including designer bags and accessories and online adult content subscriptions.
"[Santos] deceived donors into providing what they thought were contributions to his campaign but were in fact payments for his personal benefit. He reported fictitious loans to his political committees to induce donors and party committees to make further contributions to his campaign – and then diverted more campaign money to himself as purported ‘repayments’ of those fictitious loans," the report read. "He used his connections to high value donors and other political campaigns to obtain additional funds for himself through fraudulent or otherwise questionable business dealings. And he sustained all of this through a constant series of lies to his constituents, donors, and staff about his background and experience."
Over the weekend, Rep. Santos held an audio-only forum on X (formerly Twitter), in which he pledged not to resign, railed against the report and accused Guest and other members of using their positions to orchestrate a campaign to oust him out of spite. During the forum, Santos hinted at illicit behavior by other members, saying the House of Representatives was full of "felons galore" who are "more worried about getting drunk every night with the next lobbyists they're going to screw and pretend like none of us know what's going on."
Santos has scheduled a press conference on Thursday morning, likely before the expulsion vote.
