Why George Santos is a 'bludgeoning tool' for Democrats: journalist

A new analysis is explaining how Democratic leaders and lawmakers could use the controversies surrounding Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.).

In an op-ed published by The Guardian, Martin Pengelly offered details about the embattled lawmaker writing: "Santos has admitted embellishing his résumé but denied wrongdoing and insisted he will not stand down. He was recently confirmed to be under investigation by the House ethics committee, focusing on his campaign finance filings and an allegation of sexual misconduct from a former staffer."

He also echoed the remarks of New York lawmaker Marc Molinaro, who spoke about the lawmaker during a previous interview with Politico. Shortly after Santos was elected, problems began to arise as calls for the new lawmaker's resignation became more profound.

"He is a bludgeoning tool the Democrats are using without regard for truth," Molinaro said at the time.

The New York lawmaker added, "They’re lying about us in relationship to him. And he's caused us every day to have to respond to his very existence in the House of Representatives, instead of giving 100% of our time to the important issues that Americans and the people who sent us to Washington care about."

Pengelly went on to explain the Democratic strategy for using Santos to attack the Republican Party.

"Democrats reportedly plan to tie New York Republicans to Santos as they attempt to reverse losses in the state, including to Santos in the third district, which contributed to Republicans taking the House last November," he wrote.

Despite all of the odds against Santos, he has made it clear that he still has no intent on stepping down; an issue that has caused friction and opposition among Republican lawmakers.
