George Santos releases bold statement pushing back against calls for his resignation

Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) is doubling down on his intent to stay in the U.S. House of Representatives even as the embattled lawmaker faces mounting calls to resign from Congress.

On Thursday, March 16, Santos stopped to speak with reporters. During a brief interview with The Associated Press, Santos weighed in with his sentiments on the House floor.

“I was elected by the people to come here to represent them, and I do that every day,” Santos told the news outlet. “It’s a hard job. If I said it was easy, I’d be lying to you — and I don’t think that’s what we want, right?”

The lawmaker's latest remarks come as he continues to face deep scrutiny amid all of his financial scandals and reports suggesting much of his professional accolades and accomplishments are fabricated.

Weighing in on Santos' challenges, “Post-Truth” author and Boston University research fellow Lee McIntyre explained the severity of the lawmaker's actions and why accountability is important.

“It used to be that when a politician lied, and they got caught, they were ashamed — or there was some sort of accountability,” said McIntyre.

He added, “What I see in the post-truth era is not just that people are lying or lying more, it’s that they’re lying with a political purpose. The really scary part is getting away with it.”

As Santos defends his actions, lawmakers are not backing down from their stance either. In fact, Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) recently sounded off insisting lawmakers on both side of the political aisle are fed up with Santos.

“He should have resigned a long time ago,” said Garcia. “This is not just Democrats saying this and his Republican colleagues in New York. Nobody wants him in D.C.”
