Santos hit with stern warning from FEC over failure to appoint new campaign treasure

Rep. George Santos' (R-N.Y.) campaign committee could soon face serious consequences if it fails to appoint a treasurer as soon as possible, CNBC reports.
On Tuesday, February 14, the Federal Election Commission (FEC) notified Santos and his campaign regarding the resignation of his previous treasurer Nancy Marks. Although Marks parted ways with the campaign last month, she still has not been replaced.
In the letter to Santos, the FEC said that it “has received no information regarding a new treasurer” and emphasized that it is “required that for any committee to conduct any business, they must have an active treasurer.”
The agency also noted the consequences Santos could face if he and his committee fail to meet the requirement.
“Failure to appoint a treasurer will result in the inability of the committee to accept contributions and make disbursements,” the agency said, according to the news outlet. It also added that "campaigns are required to appoint a new treasurer within 10 days of the previous treasurer’s resignation."
The latest development comes just weeks after Santos’ committee, on January 25, filed paperwork indicating that Thomas Datwyler had been appointed as its new treasurer; a role Datwyler denied taking.
Per the news outlet "The FEC asked Santos’ campaign for clarification, warning that 'knowingly and willfully making any materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent statement or representation to a federal government agency' would lead to criminal charges."
Over the last several weeks, Santos has been at the center of many different controversies due to his history of compulsive lying and embellishing his resume. A number of incriminating aspects about his past have also come to light.
