Former Trump officials say a second term 'could mean the end of American democracy as we know it'

Three women who worked in then-President Donald Trump's administration are now sounding the alarm on the implications of their former boss potentially winning another term as commander-in-chief.

ABC News' Jon Karl recently interviewed Alyssa Farah Griffin, Cassidy Hutchinson and Sarah Matthews, who all worked in the Trump White House and later cooperated with the House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack's investigation in 2022. Griffin, who was the White House's director of strategic communications between April and December of 2020, was present at the end of Trump's term, and resigned from her post a month before the deadly US Capitol riot.

"Fundamentally, a second Trump term could mean the end of American democracy as we know it, and I don't say that lightly," Griffin told ABC. "We all witnessed him trying to steal a democratic election before and go to historic and unconstitutional lengths to do so."

"And that just shows that he's willing to basically break every barrier to get into power and to stay into power," she added. "But also, I'm very concerned about what the term would actually look like."

Sarah Matthews, who was a longtime Republican aide to former Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and former House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), joined Trump's reelection campaign as a spokeswoman in 2019, before becoming the White House's deputy press secretary in 2020. However, she resigned following the January 6 insurrection, and is likewise urging Americans to oppose Trump in 2024.

"We don't need to speculate what a second Trump term would look like because we already saw it play out," Matthews said. "To this day, he still doubles down on the fact that he thinks that the election was stolen and fraudulent. And then his rhetoric has just gotten increasingly erratic. I mean, he has literally called for things like doing away with parts of the Constitution, wanting to weaponize the DOJ to enact revenge on his political enemies."

Karl's interview with Griffin, Hutchinson and Matthews will air on Sunday.
