Alina Habba – President Donald Trump's personal attorney who he has since named as one of his top advisors — recently made an eyebrow-raising remark about U.S. military veterans who lost their jobs s a result of the administration's mass firings.
While taking questions from reporters outside the White House, one journalist asked her if Trump was "starting to think about some of those veterans who worked for the federal government," and if there was anything the president has in mind "to help salvage their lives." Habba remarked that while Trump care[s] about veterans tremendously," the needs of veterans didn't outweigh the goal of cutting spending.
"We have a fiscal responsibility to use taxpayers dollars to pay people who actually work," Habba said. "That doesn't mean we forget our veterans by any means, we are going to care for them the right way. But perhaps they're not fit to have a job at this moment."

Last week, the Department of Veterans' Affairs (VA) announced that it was laying off approximately 1,400 probationary employees (workers have been on the job less than a year and have fewer protections than more tenured staff). Some of those who were fired included veterans, and advocacy group Disabled American Veterans (DAV) argued the cuts would result in poorer services for veterans in need.
"The recent VA workforce cuts are deeply concerning, especially given the unprecedented lack of transparency surrounding these decisions. Veterans and their families deserve clear answers on how these reductions will impact their care and benefits," said Randy Reese, who is the executive director of DAV's Washington branch.
Centibillionaire Elon Musk has been leading the charge in the Trump administration's goal of firing thousands of federal workers. His Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, claimed to have saved taxpayers billions of dollars by laying off staff across multiple federal agencies and cancelling federal contracts. However, the New York Times pointed out that five of the biggest cuts DOGE celebrated actually saved 99% less money than what Musk claimed.
