U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents have reportedly shot two people in Portland, Oregon.
On Thursday, ABC affiliate station KATU reported that an unnamed man and woman were shot by federal agents around the 10200 block of Southeast Main Street at approximately 2:20 PM Pacific Time. The Portland Police Department received a call from a man requesting help near Northeast 146th Avenue and East Burnside. When officers arrived, they saw a man and a woman who had both suffered gunshot wounds.
Police later confirmed that CBP agents were involved in the shooting, and that the two victims were being treated for their injuries at a local hospital. Their names have not yet been released, and their immigration status is unknown.
The shooting comes just one day after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent Jonathan Ross fatally shot 37 year-old Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Portland Police Chief Bob Day urged Portland residents to allow the department time to investigate the shooting.
"We are still in the early stages of this incident," Day said in an official statement. "We understand the heightened emotion and tension many are feeling in the wake of the shooting in Minneapolis, but I am asking the community to remain calm as we work to learn more."
Portland mayor Keith Wilson lamented that his city is "now grappling with another deeply troubling incident" following the Thursday shooting, and called on President Donald Trump's administration to withdraw federal agents from Portland.
"We cannot sit by while constitutional protections erode and bloodshed mounts. Portland is not a 'training ground' for militarized agents, and the "full force" threatened by the administration has deadly consequences," he said. "As Mayor, I call on ICE to end all operations in Portland until a full investigation can be completed."
