Fani Willis hints more plea deals could be forthcoming for Trump’s GA co-defendants
14 December 2023
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is reportedly not closing the door on plea deals in the near future for some of the dozen-plus remaining co-defendants in her ongoing RICO case.
According to NBC News, Willis could be inching closer to securing additional plea deals in her ongoing investigation into alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. Willis has suggested a trial date of August 5, 2024 to Judge Scott McAfee, who is overseeing the proceedings. McAfee cast doubt on Willis when she said she planned to follow through on her promise to try everyone indicted all at once, given the high number of co-defendants in the case.
So far, four defendants — Trump attorneys Kenneth Chesebro, Jenna Ellis, Sidney Powell and bail bondsman Scott Hall — have entered guilty pleas. This leaves 15 remaining co-defendants to be tried. However, when McAfee said that even a dozen defendants at once would be a "stretch" to try at the same time, Willis suggested additional plea deals could come through between now and next August.

"I don’t know that all 15 will be at the table once they get through the process," Willis said.
Willis also remarked on potential new plea deals in a recent interview with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Earlier this week, the prosecutor said more deals could be on the way next year as the trial gets closer. She also suggested that she may take the lead in the courtroom, calling herself "a trial lawyer at my soul."
"What I have seen in my practice for these 28 years that I’ve been practicing criminal law is that typically it is after (pretrial) motions when you’ll get the most amount of pleas," Willis said.
It's possible that plea deals may be in the works for co-defendants like Robert Cheeley, Harrison Floyd and David Shafer. However, the Guardian reported in November that there are no plans to secure deals from the highest-profile targets including former President Donald Trump, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani and former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows.
