'Makes no sense': Epstein victims' lawyer slams House GOP for ignoring this key witness

Earlier this week, the House Oversight Committee issued multiple subpoenas in its investigation into deceased child predator Jeffrey Epstein. But one lawyer representing several of Epstein's victims is now railing against the effort for failing to include one notable witness who could shed the most light on Epstein.

During a Wednesday interview with MSNBC host Jen Psaki, attorney Spencer Kuvin described President Donald Trump's treatment of top Epstein co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell as a "sham," after she was transferred to a minimum-security facility for nonviolent offenders following visits by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche. Kuvin said none of his clients were notified of Maxwell's transfer ahead of time, and condemned the administration's handling of the Epstein case as "an attempt to try to whitewash" its refusal to release all of the remaining evidence on Epstein.

Kuvin said the Oversight Committee's new subpoenas were effectively meaningless, as they failed to include former Trump Labor Secretary Alex Acosta — the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida that negotiated Epstein's plea deal in 2008. Acosta's deal allowed Epstein to skate on federal charges by pleading guilty to state charges. He ended up serving just 13 months in Palm Beach County jail, and had a work release to leave prison during the day.

"This dates back to ... victim number one, the first young lady, 14 years old, that came forward, was brave enough to come forward to police and start this investigation," he said. "The federal government never consulted with the victims about the sweetheart deal that Alex Acosta negotiated and then signed off on."

"This is the same old playbook," he continued. "They're not consulting the victims about whatever they're doing right now. They're not consulting the representatives of the victims, like myself and the other lawyers that represented some of these victims. And they're just going through the motions to try to protect the administration. That's it."

As Kuvin explained, there was a nearly 40-count federal indictment against Epstein when the FBI handed over its case file to Acosta. He was then tasked with reviewing all of the evidence the federal government assembled in the case, meaning that he's "seen everything." He then observed that the fact that Republicans didn't include Acosta in their subpoenas "makes no sense."

"He has seen everything, and he then made the call to make the deal. Why is it that they are not subpoenaing the one man who has literally seen all of the evidence that exists on behalf of the federal government?" he said. "It makes no sense whatsoever. It's the one subpoena they should have issued, and skipped over all of the silly subpoenas, like to the Clintons and others who know nothing about this."
