After several members of Congress and a mayor found themselves in the middle of a tense confrontation with federal agents outside of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center, Rep. Lamonica McIver (D-N.J.) was charged with assaulting law enforcement officers. Now, the freshman member of Congress is speaking out about the charges against her.
During a Tuesday interview with MSNBC host Jen Psaki, McIver recalled how the incident "happened so fast" and that reviewing the video of the confrontation was "hard to watch." And she insisted that ICE agents and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) "escalated" tensions ahead of what was meant to be a routine visit to an immigrant detention facility.
However, one part of McIver's interview that Psaki described as "mind-blowing" was the fact that the very same people from the confrontation were the ones who ended up giving the tour of the facility after the dust settled.

"It was the same people. We actually had ICE officials come there, the ICE regional director for that area came along with many of his cabinet members," McIver said. "They took the entire tour with us after that whole situation happened. I mean, they literally offered us a soda too."
The freshman lawmaker didn't mince words when Psaki asked her about interim U.S. Attorney Alina Habba – who previously represented President Donald Trump in New York — charging her with multiple felonies. McIver said that it was "not shocking" that Habba didn't first consult with the Department of Justice's Public Integrity unit (which is supposed to authorize arrests of sitting elected officials) before announcing the charges against her.
"We've been seeing from this administration constant breaking of the rules, constant breaking of the process, constant disregard to the Constitution," McIver said. "[I] try not to be surprised by some of the things that they do because they're so outrageous. And so to see them disregarding process as usual, it's just it's a regular day in the Trump administration."
"I just think there are so many other important things for Alina to be focused on rather than trying to stop Congress members from doing their jobs," she added.
