'Defective' Biden impeachment will imperil Republicans — not Democrats: attorney

On Thursday, September 14, special counsel David Weiss indicted President Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden, on federal gun charges. The charges follow a plea deal that fell through in late July.

Meanwhile, in a separate matter, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-California) is determined to move forward with an impeachment inquiry against the president related to his son's lobbying activities with the Ukrainian energy company Burisma. Democrats — as well as some moderate Republicans — have been stressing that McCarthy's allies have yet to turn up any evidence that President Biden did anything illegal or corrupt in Ukraine.

In an op-ed published by the Guardian on September 14, attorney Lloyd Green — who served in the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) in the early 1990s — argues that an impeachment will hurt Republicans, not the president.

"Impeachment will likely pave the way for Republican overreach and stories aplenty of the speaker being inept and beholden to Republican jihadists," Green warns. "It might even cost him his job. The latest polls peg McCarthy's favorability at minus 16."

Green adds that McCarthy "may be facilitating the end of the current House majority and, by extension, his gig as speaker."

"While the public has little love for Biden," the attorney/DOJ alumni argues, "the impeachment drive could well strike swing voters as a bridge too far. First, the inquiry appears to be legally defective. McCarthy embarked on this voyage without an authorization vote, and that may be a big deal — one that rules out the prospect of compliance or assistance from Merrick Garland's Justice Department."
