Cop who killed George Floyd 'stabbed by another inmate' in federal prison and 'seriously injured'

Disgraced former Minneapolis, Minnesota police officer Derek Chauvin — who was convicted in 2021 for the murder of George Floyd — was just stabbed at a federal prison in Arizona.

According to the Associated Press, Chauvin was "stabbed by another inmate and seriously injured" in the attack around 12:30 PM local time, and taken to a local hospital for further treatment after prison staff performed "life-saving measures." Chauvin is roughly a year into both a 21-year federal prison sentence for depriving Floyd of his constitutional rights, and a 22 year state-level sentence for second-degree murder.

Chauvin was sent to FCI Tucson in 2022 after serving time at a maximum security prison in Minnesota, where he was largely kept in solitary confinement for his own protection. The AP reports that FCI Tucson has been "plagued by security lapses and staffing shortages," and that this is the second such incident in roughly a year.

In November 2022, an inmate pulled a gun and attempted to shoot a visitor, though the weapon misfired and no one was hurt. This is also the second attack on a high-profile federal prisoner in the last five months. At a separate federal prison in Florida, former sports doctor Larry Nassar, who is serving time in prison for serial sex offenses committed against gymnasts, was stabbed by an inmate in July. He survived the attack.

On May 25, 2020, Chauvin was recorded on video kneeling on the neck of Floyd for approximately eight minutes and 15 seconds, who was being detained for allegedly paying for a pack of cigarettes with a counterfeit $20 bill. Floyd was heard on the video screaming "I can't breathe" and crying for his mother in the moments before his murder. The video outraged protesters, who took to the streets both in the US and around the world in a summer-long wave of anti-police brutality protests, with "I can't breathe" as a rallying cry.

According to a New York Times analysis of the events of that day, Chauvin "did not remove his knee even after Mr. Floyd lost consciousness and for a full minute and 20 seconds after paramedics arrived at the scene." Chauvin and several other officers present during Floyd's murder were all fired the next day, and subsequently charged by Hennepin County prosecutors. Tou Thao, who was acting as a "human traffic cone" at the time of Floyd's murder, was sentenced to four years and nine months in state prison.
