Convicted Russian spy Maria Butina gets 18 months in prison: 'I have destroyed my own life'

Maria Butina, the Russian woman accused of running a spy operation that sought to influence key conservative groups. has been sentence to 18 months in federal prison. After that, she is expected to be sent back to Russia, NBC reports.

“NEW: Mariia Butina has been sentenced to 18 months in prison (9 with credit for time served) for conspiring to act as an agent of a foreign government, in this case Russia, and when she’s done with that sentence she’ll be tossed from the U.S. @CharlieGileNBC reports,” wrote NBC reporter Tom Winter on Twitter.

She said her parents are suffering and “I have destroyed my own life.”
