Popular comedian Shane Gillis hosted ESPN's annual ESPYs (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly) awards ceremony Wednesday night, and roasted numerous prominent athletes in the room along with President Donald Trump.
During his monologue, Gillis referenced Trump on multiple occasions, including one moment in which he said popular podcaster Joe Rogan wanted him to capture NBA commissioner Adam Silver "because Joe thinks he's an alien." Gillis then quipped: "And Donald Trump wanted me to be here to capture [New York Mets outfielder] Juan Soto for the same reason."
In one part of Gillis' monologue that spread rapidly on social media, the comedian referenced both the January 6, 2021 siege of the U.S. Capitol and the ongoing controversy over the Trump administration's handling of files pertaining to convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

"Donald Trump wants to stage a UFC fight on the White House lawn. The last time he staged a fight in D.C., [former Vice President] Mike Pence almost died," Gillis said to laughter. "Actually, there was supposed to be an Epstein joke here, but I guess it got deleted. Must have probably deleted itself, right? Probably never existed, actually. Let's move on as a country and ignore that."
Gillis' joke comes in the midst of a news cycle dominated by Epstein, as Trump has lately found himself at odds with his MAGA base over his administration's assertion that the rumored "Epstein client list" doesn't exist. Attorney General Pam Bondi – who invited various MAGA influencers to Washington D.C. in February and gave them binders full of what she claimed were new revelations about the convicted child predator — said earlier this week that she intended to stop talking about Epstein.
In a Wednesday post to his Truth Social platform, Trump himself recently directed his rage at his supporters who refused to let the issue go away. The president insisted that the Epstein files were a "hoax" concocted by Democrats, and that his supporters were manipulated by his political enemies.
"They haven’t learned their lesson, and probably never will, even after being conned by the Lunatic Left for 8 long years," Trump said in the post. "I have had more success in 6 months than perhaps any President in our Country’s history, and all these people want to talk about, with strong prodding by the Fake News and the success starved Dems, is the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax. Let these weaklings continue forward and do the Democrats work, don’t even think about talking of our incredible and unprecedented success, because I don’t want their support anymore!"
