19 year-old political commentator Brilyn Hollyhand is hoping to be the one to carry the torch of the young conservative movement in the wake of far-right activist Charlie Kirk's fatal shooting earlier this month. But some in the MAGA world aren't so enthusiastic.
The Bulwark's Will Sommer wrote Monday about how Hollyhand's rise in the wake of Kirk's murder has left a bad taste in the mouth of some in the MAGA sphere — particularly after Hollyhand posted a video of himself in a private jet while wearing a luxury watch. Hollyhand, who has been regarded as Kirk's "heir apparent" by the Telegraph, prompted a wave of outrage with the video, with many criticizing his display of wealth as distasteful and out of touch.
Conspiracy theorist Mike Adams (who has been associated with Alex Jones) called Hollyhand a "goober" in a lengthy post to his more than 300,000 X followers, opined that Hollyhand "comes across as completely fake" and is "just spewing garbage talking points while being backed by daddy's deep pockets and flying in a luxury private jet."
"This kid never earned anything that would justify the publicity that's being bought and placed upon him," Adams wrote, asserting that Hollyhand has "faced nothing but golden walkways and pre-determined outcomes arranged for him by somebody else."
Despite Hollyhand calling Kirk a "mentor," others who were close to Kirk have also expressed doubt about Hollyhand being the inheritor of Kirk's legacy. Tyler Bowyer, who is the chief operating officer of Turning Point Action (the advocacy arm of Kirk's Turning Point USA), wrote on X that Hollyhand was financially backed by former Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel (who was later ousted by President Donald Trump), adding that he "really let us all down."
Hollyhand also claimed that his current "tour" of college campuses was being done in partnership with TPUSA. However, Bowyer clarified that Hollyhand was not a TPUSA employee and quipped that he had "set up to speak at 8 or so local ones and is calling it a tour."
Sommer wrote that Hollyhand's troubles convincing MAGA to support him may only become more difficult, once knowledge about his father's work as an affordable housing developer spreads.
"His family has grown wealthy from building affordable housing — a cardinal sin on the segregationist right," he wrote. "To them, the Hollyhands benefited from bringing poor, mostly minority families on Section 8 vouchers into white neighborhoods."
Not all in the MAGA movement are bearish on Hollyhand's rise. Trump ally Laura Loomer tweeted that the backlash against Hollyhand for his private jet video was unwarranted.
"Why are people so toxic?" Loomer wrote. "Don’t be so jealous of him because he comes from money and you don’t ... Leave him alone."
