'Everything’s on the table': Carroll lawyer not ruling out another lawsuit against Trump

Columnist E. Jean Carroll was recently awarded $83.3 million by a New York jury that ruled former President Donald Trump defamed her in 2019. But Carroll may not be done with Trump just yet.

While speaking with CNN's Anderson Cooper, attorney Roberta Kaplan (no relation to US District Judge Lewis F. Kaplan, who oversaw the proceedings) said that her client's next move will depend on Trump's.

"If he continues to defame her, will there be — is there potential there's another case?" Cooper asked.

"I'm too good of a lawyer to tell you that, but I mean, everything's on the table," Kaplan said.

Trump has used his Truth Social platform to repeatedly attack both Carroll and Judge Kaplan, with many of those attacks prompting angry responses from his millions of followers. Earlier this week, Trump attacked Carroll more than 40 times in one day as the trial was in progress. Many of Trump's attacks on Carroll have been in regard to her previous statements about sex, even though Carroll had a column for Elle magazine that focused on sex and relationships.

A subsequent defamation lawsuit wouldn't be out of the question. Both Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss — two poll workers who were baselessly accused by former Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani of foul play in Georgia's 2020 election — have since filed a second lawsuit against Giuliani for continuing to defame them. Giuliani repeated his false accusations about Freeman and Moss outside of the courthouse immediately after a jury ordered him to pay a $148 million judgment.

The former president has promised to appeal Friday's verdict, just as he's currently appealing a 2023 verdict that found him liable both for sexual abuse and for a separate defamation incident. Regardless of the outcome of the appeal, Trump will still have to put up either the money plus interest into an account managed by the court, or collateral for a loan. Carroll attorney Shawn Crowley said on Friday that she feels confident they'll win on appeal.
