Two California House candidates headed to runoff leave voters with sharp decision

The race to replace former Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) will likely leave California voters with the task of making a "sharply defined" decision when it comes to selecting the candidate that closely aligns with their beliefs, Politico reports.

According to NBC News, two political candidates heading to Central California's special election in June are Democrat Lourin Hubbard and Republican Connie Conway. Since none of the candidates on the ballot were able to claim a substantial majority to win the election, it has advanced to a run-off between the top front-running candidates, Hubbard and Conway.

Both candidates reportedly have hard-line political beliefs. Politico describes Hubbard as "a progressive Democrat who supports universal health care" while Conway, a conservative Republican, was a member of the Trump administration. The election comes months after Nunes' departure from the House of Representatives. The former lawmaker vacated the seat to lead operations for Truth Social, former President Donald Trump's Twitter-like social media app.

When the election results were tallied, Hubbard had almost 20% of the vote. Since Nunes' former district typically leans Republican, it is projected that Republicans will likely maintain the seat. The special election is scheduled to coincide with Californa's 2022 primary election on June 7.
