Biden mocks Trump’s comments on economy with brutal 6-word response

Now that President Joe Biden no longer has to worry about running for reelection, he's taken on a noticeably different tone in his remarks to reporters. The latest example happened Thursday afternoon while Biden was standing outside of Marine One.

Fox News aired a brief exchange between a reporter standing off-screen, asking Biden about what he thought of former President Donald Trump's most recent campaign rally when he brought up the cost of living in the United States.

"Mr. Trump says he wants to make America affordable again," the reporter asked. "Your response?"

"He ought to get a job," Biden quipped.

The president's remark comes as Republicans are aiming to make the economy the centerpiece of their argument to return to power in November. During a campaign rally in Asheville, North Carolina, Trump harped on Biden's handling of the economy and argued that he would be better at driving down costs than Democrats.

However, Trump has somewhat had the wind taken out of his sails, as his Asheville speech was preempted by a Consumer Price Index (CPI) report that the inflation rate for July dipped below 3% for the first time since 2021. That, combined with the July jobs report showing that real wage growth (meaning inflation-adjusted) was at 3.6%, means that Americans have more disposable income on average.

And according to a recent analysis by the Washington Post's Philip Bump, Trump's other policies — like the mass detention and deportations of undocumented immigrants —could actually cause more harm to the economy in the long run. If Trump's goal is to lower prices for Americans, deporting millions of immigrants would cause a significant shock to several sectors of the economy that rely heavily on immigrant labor. Should sectors like agriculture suddenly experience a drastic shortage of workers, it's likely that grocery prices could soar.

During a Wednesday gaggle with reporters at the White House, NBC senior White House correspondent Gabe Gutierrez asked Biden if the U.S. had overcome the inflation that rocked the economy in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Like his Thursday comments, the president candidly responded with a short sentence, and a bit of humor for emphasis.

"Yes, yes, yes, I told you we were gonna have a soft landing," Biden said. "My policies are working. Start writing that way, OK?"
