'For the sake of the planet': AOC slams SCOTUS for its assault on efforts to mitigate climate change

As the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday announced its ruling to limit the federal government's involvement in the efforts to mitigate climate change, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) sounded off with her reaction.

According to HuffPost, the Democratic lawmaker is urging her colleagues to kill the filibuster as she insists the planet depends on it. On Thursday, June 30, the Democratic lawmaker took to Twitter to criticize the ruling which she described as "catastrophic."

“A filibuster carveout is not enough,” Ocasio-Cortez added. “We need to reform or do away with the whole thing, for the sake of the planet.”

The Supreme Court's ruling on West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) bars the agency "from regulating carbon emissions from power plants." Shortly after reports began circulating about the ruling, Ocasio-Cortez retweeted the break in the case which was shared by climate journalist Kate Aronoff. “Minority rule in the United States is a threat to life on earth,” Aronoff tweeted.

Other Twitter users also chimed in agreement with Ocasio-Cortez to share their reaction to the ruling. One Twitter user wrote, "There is no mention of the words Filibuster in the Constitution… why won’t the Democrats do what is right for the People??!!"

Another user wrote, "I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, this court has gone rogue. This country has a serious problem on its hands. A criminal president appoints three radical judges and now we get to pay the price."

Ocasio-Cortez also tweeted her support of President Joe Biden's remarks suggesting that he would also "support an 'exception' to the filibuster to codify abortion rights in the country," per HuffPost.

“I believe we have to codify Roe v. Wade into law, and the way to do that is to make sure Congress votes to do that,” Biden said, adding, “And if the filibuster gets in the way — it’s like voting rights — we should be requiring an exception to the filibuster for this action to deal with the Supreme Court decision."

The latest push for lawmakers to ax the filibuster comes months after progressives' repeated calls for the filibuster to be killed. Despite the adamant calls, high-ranking Democratic lawmakers have been hesitant to move forward with the initiative.
