A scathing ad slamming Greg Abbott was pulled from football broadcast at the last minute: report

On Saturday, September 18, a scathing Lincoln Project ad attacking Texas Gov. Greg Abbott was scheduled to air during ESPN's broadcast of a football game between the University of Texas and Rice University. But the ad was pulled at the last minute, and according to Guardian reporter Richard Luscombe, The Lincoln Project is trying to find out if Abbott's office somehow influenced the decision to pull the ad.

"On Sunday," Luscombe reports, "the group said it intended to file a public records request with the University of Texas to see if Abbott's office influenced the decision to pull the ad."

The Lincoln Project is a conservative group that has been vehemently critical of former President Donald Trump and his allies, and its anti-Abbott ad slams the Texas governor for his mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In an official statement, The Lincoln Project said, "Instead of focusing on the task of keeping Texans safe from the coronavirus pandemic, it appears Abbott and his advisers are focusing their time and energy on censoring their political opponent. We're not finished with Gov. Abbott."

Hospitals in Texas are being overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients, and The Lincoln Project's ad stresses that Abbott's policies have made the problem worse. Abbott, like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, has pandered to Trumpistas by banning mask mandates in Texas' public schools — much to the chagrin of school officials in parts of the state.

The ad declares, "Texas is now one of the leading states in COVID deaths…. More than 60,475 Texans are dead."
