The Independent reports President Donald Trump infuriated his MAGA supporters when he suggested immigrant workers are needed to fill high-skill roles that Americans aren’t smart enough to do.
In a Monday interview with Laura Ingraham on Fox News, Trump said the U.S. economy has to “bring in talent” in some cases on the H-1B specialist visa program, which is popular in the tech world.
Ingraham insisted that there were “talented people” in America that companies could hire, but Trump slapped aside away her claim.
“No you don’t,” he said. “You don’t have certain talents, and people have to learn. You can’t take people off an unemployment line and say, ‘I’m going to put you into a factory and we’re going to make missiles.’”
Trump’s remarks are a callback to similar claims billionaire and Trump ally Elon Musk made earlier this year, which similarly infuriated Trump’s “America First” MAGA base. Then and now, Trump’s remarks sent MAGA supporters into a fury.
“This is insane — we are going to lose the mid-terms so badly,” said pro-Trump Florida county commissioner Anthony Sabatini on X. “We’ve never seen an administration crash [and] burn in its first year so badly — for no reason other than to appease donors [and] special interests.”
“Trump broke everyone's heart with this line about the American workforce and H-1B's,” said right-wing commentator Mike Cernovich in an X post that helped Trump’s comments go viral.
MAGA members of the general public also voiced their shock at Trump, who has built a political career on a hard line anti-immigration stance.
“Trump is wrong,” replied a commenter on X who describes himself as “unwoke.”
“We have plenty of talent; what we lack are companies willing to pay a competitive wage," the continued. "Corporate [executives] are lying and everyone knows it.
“It’s almost like he wants to alienate us,” said another MAGA X account.
The Independent reports some in the president’s corner defended the need to seek international talent, with conservative commentator Scott Jennings saying in a panel discussion on CNN: “You can be America First and also recognize there may be times that you can import talent from other countries that makes America stronger. We’ve done that for decades.”
But still more MAGA accounts warned to “Pay attention to the a—— kissers who are defending this clown.”
