Don't believe the right-wing fear-mongering about turning into Venezuela - here's Democratic Socialists actually want

A silly but common talking point on the far right is that if Sen. Bernie Sanders and his political protégé, Congresswoman-Elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, like socialism so much, they should spend time in Venezuela—a country that has been plagued by everything from food shortages to hyperinflation to appalling crime rates. Andres Malave, a spokesperson for Americans for Prosperity, echoes this tired talking point in a new article for Investor’s Business Daily—insisting that a vote for Sanders, Ocasio-Cortez or Andrew Gillum (who narrowly lost to Republican Ron DeSantis in the 2018 Florida gubernatorial race) is a vote for the policies of Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro or his late predecessor, Hugo Chavez. The problem with that knee-jerk argument is that none of them have held up Maduro-era Venezuela as a role model—and the countries that liberal/progressive politicians like Sanders, Ocasio-Cortez and Gillum typically look up to are European democracies such as Denmark, Switzerland, Norway, the Netherlands and Sweden.

Our Republic Is in Crisis - And It’s Killing Us. Can We Really Claim We Didn’t See It Coming?

A NYT Column Imagined Trump Actually Shooting Someone on 5th Ave - And It's Terrifyingly Realistic

It would have been hard to imagine back in 2016 that things would look so bad for the White House less than two years into President Donald Trump's term. He faces multiple lawsuits, investigations, and potential criminal charges, dozens of his staff have resigned or been fired, two of his Cabinet officials have been forced out by scandal, his ex-campaign chair has been found guilty of eight counts of federal crimes and is on trial for more, and his legacy of policymaking itself is already marred with human rights abuses, neglect, incompetence, and corruption.

These 5 Race-Baiting and Hypocritical Right-Wingers Complain About the 'Race Card' - While Playing the Race Card Themselves

A game that many Republicans and people on the far-right love to play is going out of their way to be racially inflammatory, then accusing people of “playing the race card” when they are called out—and Republican Corey Stewart, who is running against incumbent Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine in Virginia in the 2018 midterms, is a prime example. Stewart has praised Confederate soldiers, exalted Gen. Robert E. Lee and Gen. Stonewall Jackson as honorable men and asserted that Virginians should be proud to display Confederate flags. But when the Rev. Al Sharpton interviewed Stewart on his MSNBC program, “Politics Nation,” on August 12, Stewart insisted that Sharpton was a “race hustler” for calling him out.

Conservative and notorious racist Ben Shapiro is apparently, like many right-wing commentators, obsessed with New York Democratic congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and so he decided this week to offer a $10,000 donation to her campaign in exchange for having a debate.
