Two guys walk into a bar. One’s from Vermont, the other from Texas. At first glance, it seems like the two don’t have much in common. But upon further investigation it becomes clear there’s one area where their similarities shine: their porn viewing habits.

The folks over at the Pornhub analytics blog have stepped up to find out what they are. In partnership with Vocativ, they put together the top ranking search terms and categories across the United States.

“Lesbian” proves the most searched term in the majority of the states in the West, Midwest and East Coast. Vocativ suggests that the trend “represents a shared interest even between such politically disparate places.”

Traveling further north, things get a bit more incestuous. “Stepsister” is the preferred search term in states like Wyoming, Montana, Minnesota, Ohio and Maine. “Stepmom” proves particularly popular in Alaska, Washington, Kentucky and New Hampshire. “MILF” searches are most popular in Rhode Island.

Then there are those who like their smut a bit more animated. “Cartoon” is the top ranking search in places like Nebraska, Arkansas, Tenneesee and Vermont.

According to the 2010 Census, the states with the highest proportion of African American residents are Mississippi, Louisiana and Georgia. In the porn search category, “ebony” and “black” are top search terms in those states along with Delaware. Hawaiians are most likely to search for “Asian.”

Again, “lesbian” is the most popular of the 100 or so categories on the site. “Teen” is the top-ranking category viewed in 19 different Western, Midwest and Northeast states. These are the ties that bind.
