Zuccotti Park's Owners Owe New York City $139,000 in Back Taxes

Brookfield Properties, the owners of Zuccotti Park, owes the city of New York over $139,000 in back taxes, dating back to 2007. The New York Daily News:

“That’s obviously ironic,” said City Councilman Jumaane Williams (D-Brooklyn), who was arrested last month protesting the NYPD clearing of Zuccotti Park.

“Occupy Wall Street has been talking about economic disparity . . . and here’s Brookfield Properties, which has worked with the mayor to keep the messengers out, not paying their share.”

Brookfield denies tax evasion, however, and says the city has made an error. Melissa Coley, spokesperson for the company: "We are in discussion with the city’s Department of Finance, and we anticipate that this error will be resolved very shortly with Brookfield owing no additional funds.”

Other companies on the city's back-taxes shitlist: Heineken, the WNBA, the Rev. Al Sharpton, the WNBA, and—in another case of irony—Lehman Brothers, which still owes $71,000. Read the full piece here, via ThinkProgress.
