Merry Xmas: NBA Likely to Return December 25, With Re-Formed Union

Basketball fans, rejoice: the NBA's players and owners have tentatively reached an agreement that would end this dead season on December 25. WSJ:

The two sides met for 15 hours at a Manhattan office building, in the first major talks since the union disbanded Nov. 14. In a joint press conference with player representatives, Commissioner David Stern said he will speak with the league's owners on a conference call later Saturday, and that he expects them to support the deal.

Billy Hunter, who was the executive director of the union before it disbanded, said he was confident the players would support the deal. Two players—Maurice Evans and Derek Fisher—attended the meetings Friday night. Mr. Stern said that free agency and training camp will begin simultaneously on Dec. 9.

No details yet, but the deal will, according to NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver, balance out the playing field, giving "big-spending teams less of an advantage in free agency—though he conceded the final deal will not be the one the owners sought."
