First GOP Debate Is Mostly a Boring Waste of Time, But Good Fodder for Stephen Colbert

Last night's inaugural GOP presidential debate was doomed to fail before it even began. Only a handful of the Republican 2012 hopefuls bothered to attend, and those who did show up were, to put it charitably, not exactly the party's brightest shining stars. In a field that includes Newt Gingrich and Michele Bachmann, that should tell you something about the quality of these individuals.

Who didgrace the podium(s) last night? Ron Paul, Herman Cain, Tim Pawlenty, Rick Santorum (don't Google him!), and Gary Johnson. As PBSreports, the weak turnout meant that the debate did little to shape the race.

The lack of attendance by Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and other top-tier presidential hopefuls at Thursday night's GOP debate was notable enough to get its own round of questioning.

The Fox News debate moderators tried to get those on the stage in Greenville, S.C., to take shots at their missing potential opponents, but most refused to do so.

Boriiiiiing. Jed Lewison, who live-blogged the debate for the Daily Kos, agreed that it was a snooze.

Final thought: I want a rebate on this debate. And I still have no idea what Tim Pawlenty was doing there. And now Sean Hannity has the job of spinning it. Yawn. I'm going to see if the Mariners are on television.

But it wasn't all a wash for us progressives. Stephen Colbert was able to make some funnies about the debate -- without even seeing it! (His show was taped before the debate aired.) First he made fun of how Fox News' darlings, including Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee, who has a show on Fox News, snubbed the network by not appearing in the Fox broadcast of the debate. Of the actual debaters, he had this to say: they're "actual upright, breathing bipeds." That about says it. Watch the segment here:
