Lady Gaga Dumps Target Over Anti-Gay Policies

Lady Gaga has been pretty activist when it comes to LGBT issues, particularly that on Don't Ask, Don't Tell. She's Twittered at Congresspeople and spoken at rallies. And while some people see Gaga's overtures to gays as pandering for audience, you have to hand it to her -- she even puts her money where her mouth is. Today, she ended her partnership with Target, reportedly over their practice of donating dollars to anti-gay politicians. When she signed the deal, she said Target would have to donate to gay charities to 'make up' for those infractions, but apparently the corporation didn't follow through to her liking. In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, her publicist said, 'Lady Gaga and Target came to a mutual decision to end their overall exclusive partnership a few weeks ago.”

The partnership in question was one to distribute a deluxe edition of her new album 'Born This Way' exclusively through Target -- certainly lucrative, but given the company's donations, it would have been grossly hypocritical of Gaga. The title track is her latest gay rights anthem, and includes the lyric I'm beautiful in my way/ Cause God makes no mistakes/ I'm on the right track, baby/I was born this way. (It also sounds identical to Madonna's 'Express Yourself,' but that's another story.) Target told employees it stopped making the contributions after a public outrage last year -- but the corporation continued to do so, the Awl reported.
