Dubious: Arizona House GOP Passes Bill to Ban Race- and Gender-Based Abortions

This is rich! Arizona Republicans have introduced a bill that would ban abortions that were made on the basis of race or sex. The Tucson Sentinel:

The measure, authored by Rep. Steve Montenegro, R-Litchfield Park, would require doctors performing abortions to sign affidavits stating that the reason for the abortion isn't the fetus' race or sex. It would allow the father, if married to the woman who gets an abortion, to sue the doctor if he believes the doctor knowingly performed it based on the race or sex. If the mother isn't 18, the maternal grandparents would be able to sue.

Montenegro called race- and sex-selection abortions a violation of human rights, saying these abortions are often grisly, late-term surgeries. Democrats questioned whether such abortions are happening in the state, while Republicans said the measure would help end discrimination against unborn children.

In other words, even though gender- and race-based abortions are not known to be a common or actual thing in the United States, it gives people who aren't the woman having the procedure more ways to assert control over her body. It's so transparent it's hard not to laugh about it, particularly the sudden concern with race -- These are the same people who brought you SB 1070, so apparently it's okay to be racially profiled if you're a full-grown person, but fetal profiling is not OK. Of course, anyone having an abortion because they do not want a child based on its race or gender is despicable, but with the war on women's right to choose being waged by Republicans across the nation, it's hard to view this measure as being about what it says it is.
