CNN Throws in With Tea Party PAC To Co-Sponsor Debate

Politico's Kenneth P. Vogel is reporting that CNN will co-sponsor a Republican presidential debate with Tea Party Express in August 2011. What's wrong with this picture? Tea Party Express is a political action committee, an not just any PAC. It's the entity that poured millions into the mid-term elections to support, with out-of-state donations, the candidacies of Sharron Angle in Nevada, Jeff Joe Miller in Alaska, and Christine O'Donnell in Delaware, to name a few. Oh, and let's not forget Carl the Racist Porn Freak Paladino, who challenged Andrew Cuomo in New York's gubernatorial race.

So, the candidates will essentially be participating in a debate co-sponsored by an entity from which they will be seeking campaign contributions. Any candidate who participates had better play to the Tea Party crowd. And any candidate who does not will suffer the ire of the Tea Party crowd. But worse than that, CNN -- a supposedly objective news provider -- is coupling its brand to an entity that actively supports particular candidates, and candidates of a particular authoritarian and theological brand.

It's hard to see how this enhances CNN's reputation as it struggles to rise out of third place among the cable news networks.

AlterNet covered Tea Party Express's mid-term activities in our investigation, Tea Party Inc., which we did in collaboration with the Investigative Fund at The Nation Institute.
