Authorities Bust Brutal Sex Slavery Ring

Further proof that sex trafficking and child slavery are still alive and well in America arrives this week in an indictment against a massive operation in the midwest and south

A primarily Somali network of gangs based out of Ohio, Tennessee and Minnesota spent years coercing or forcing  young girls (some as young as 13) into prostitution and sex slavery. This week, an indictment of 29 gang members was unsealed and the details were appalling and grisly, full of details of teenage girls subjected to gang rape and coercion. According to a pieceby the Daily Beast crime reporter Christine Pelisek:

Federal authorities have charged more than three dozen Somali gang members with prostitution, burglary, car theft, and credit card fraud, according to an indictment by the United States Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee which details how the gang members, who operated in Minnesota, Tennessee and Ohio, sold the girls into prostitution in exchange for booze or marijuana.

The girls were sometimes kidnapping victims, sometimes runaways who were taken advantage of, sometimes just neighborhood girls who were lured by gang members and their girlfriends into a life of casual prostitution that eventually led into sex slavery.

“Gradually the youngsters [were] made to become full sexual slaves—that [was] the beginning,” said Dahir Jibreel, executive director of the Somali Justice Advocacy Center, according to The Daily Beast. “The stories they told me were shocking, really shocking. They told me there were organized pimps and madam houses and all that kind of thing.”

This sting was part of a larger nationwide sweep and crackdown on child prostitution.
