Romney Grasps at Straws, Tries to Divert Tax Return Heat onto... Teresa Heinz Kerry?

Mitt Romney is clearly a cornered man, if he's lodging this defense. Under pressure to release his tax returns prior to 2010—which a vast range of people think might reveal something untoward, from your average progressives to his fellow Republicans—the candidate is trying to divert attention onto Teresa Heinz Kerry, wife of 2004 Dem Presidential nominee John Kerry. Romney says she didn't reveal her tax returns either:

On Sunday, senior Romney adviser Ed Gillespie claimed that Romney need only release two years of tax returns, in line with the precedent set by former presidential nominees John McCain and John Kerry. “It’s the standard that Sen. John Kerry as the Democratic nominee said was the standard,” Gillespie said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

But Kerry actually released 20 years of returns when he challenged President George W. Bush in 2004.

“John Kerry ran for president,” Mitt Romney said Monday morning on “Fox & Friends.” “You know, his wife, who has hundreds of millions of dollars, she never released her tax returns. Somehow, this wasn’t an issue.”

Oh, brother. You getting the increasing feeling that Romney is at heart just a sniveling little weenie? Anyway, Talking Points Memo points out that he actually tried to bring up the Kerry narrative months ago, after which the media squelched it by correcting his math. So presumably he'll be super okay when we start asking to see Ann Romney's tax returns, too. Twenty years of them!
