In a meeting that was both historic and deeply troubling, President Donald Trump praised North Korean leader Kim Jong-un as "honorable" and spoke optimistically about the prospect of working together.

But as they met in the relative serenity and peace at a Singaporean resort, Trump made no mention of the dictator's oppression of his own people, his lawless regime that has killed Americans, or the extraordinary level of human rights abuses that continue under his watch.

"We will have a terrific relationship, I have no doubt," Trump said.

Kim's comments, as told through a translator, were somewhat more measured.

"Well, it was not easy to get here," he said. "The past worked as fetters on our limbs, and the old prejudices and practices worked as obstacles on our way forward. But we overcame all of them, and we are here today."
