WATCH: Stephen Colbert Politely Makes Donald Rumsfeld Squirm Like Hell

Rumsfeld: "If it were a fact, it wouldn't be called intelligence."

Stephen Colbert hosted Donald Rumsfeld on his show Monday night, and the late-night host did everything he could to make the interview seem cordial.

At first, it seemed that Colbert might be letting the architect of the Iraq war off the hook, when he said it was not really a fair question to ask if Rumsfeld would still invade Iraq if he knew what we know today about the lack of weapons of mass destruction. Rumsfeld seemed very relieved that Colbert did not ask that.

But then, using Rumsfeld's famous pretzel-logic phrase about unknown knowns and known unknowns, Colbert pretty much asked Rumsfeld whether he regrets lying to the American people.

Rumsfeld did not have a great answer for that, though he spun some more of his infamously tortured, self-justifying logic, at one point saying another one for the ages: "If it were a fact, it wouldn't be called intelligence."
