Reporter Emily Jane Fox explained on MSNBC Thursday why, despite her stance as an advocate for families and women, first daughter and White House adviser Ivanka Trump has been unable to seriously influence on policy.

Her inability to hold sway over President Donald Trump was particularly evident this week when she finally broke her silence about separating immigrant families only after her father had already reversed his public position on the issue.

"She stayed silent, and the only explanation is can give you is what I reported in the book," Fox said referring to her new book Born Trump. "She just has this twisted relationship with her father where she will never really stand up against him. And we've only seen her do it one time in the entire time she's been in the White House and even throughout the campaign. It was with [Alabama Senate candidate] Roy Moore, and he was furious with her after that."

She continued: "It seems to me her father's reaction to her is more important than the advocacy she came to Washington to do and that she's been spending the last year and a half doing."

Like her father, Fox argued, Ivanka Trump is able to convince herself of the lies she tells about her own influence.

"She says, 'I'm an advocate! I'm an advocate! I'm an advocate!' even though there's no instance in which she's actually been an effective advocate in the White House," Fox said.
