Trump's Child-Stealing Policy Is Part of His Sick Plan to Give Republican Base 'Reason to Vote'

The president will hurt anyone, including children, to win.

Republicans planned to run on their tax overhaul to win in November’s midterm elections. But it turns out that the law isn’t very popular and even Republicans aren’t strongly mobilized to vote by it, so Donald Trump is pivoting back to the horse he came in on—racism and hatred, directed at immigrants in particular. Monday, Trump railed against “the death, the destruction that’s been caused by people coming into this country” and insisted both that “We have the worst immigration laws in the entire world” and that he was protecting the U.S. from “what’s happening in Europe” (accepting refugees fleeing for their lives—how awful). So that’s the strategy:

“People don’t turn out to say thank you,” said Corey Lewandowski, one of the president’s top political advisers. “If you want to get people motivated, you’ve got to give them a reason to vote. Saying ‘build the wall and stop illegals from coming in and killing American citizens’ gives them an important issue.”

The “reason to vote” is fearing brown people so much you think it’s a good thing to tear children from their parents’ arms. And, says another Trump adviser, “it’s the reality of where the party is.” With ample encouragement from Trump himself, mind you.

Expect the coming months to be a worse and worse cesspool of bigotry and hate coming from the very top. The task for the resistance is to simultaneously fight each evil move by the Trump administration and keep our eye on the midterms and electing a Congress that will conduct oversight and do what it can to block Trump’s agenda.
