It’s a new day for AlterNet

It’s part of a long-planned transition that will ensure the stability and future of the AlterNet brand, and allow AlterNet’s former parent to return to focusing on what they do best – producing the amazing and insightful news and commentary you expect every day.

Effective today, AlterNet has been acquired by the owners of Raw Story. It’s part of a long-planned transition that will ensure the stability and future of the AlterNet brand, and allow AlterNet’s former parent to return to focusing on what they do best – producing the amazing and insightful news and commentary you expect every day.

What you can expect

AlterNet will continue to carry content from the Independent Media Institute, its prior owner. Thus, much of the content you expect will remain the same. You will see articles by former AlterNet writers appearing with the Independent Media Institute byline.

AlterNet will also have new staff dedicated to generating fresh, original content throughout the day. Our goal is to create vivid content for social media and other platforms that allow AlterNet to grow, while maintaining the long-form journalism that is AlterNet’s hallmark. You will see front page stories change more frequently during the day.

AlterNet will also continue to carry coverage from other sites and brands that agree to work with our new company. We have also acquired the LGBT-focused news site, The New Civil Rights Movement, whose content you may see on AlterNet from time-to-time.

In the coming months, you will see a new front page design and additional mobile functionality. This will bring AlterNet into a more contemporary format and allow us to work more easily with the content management platform.

What isn’t going to change

What’s not going to change is AlterNet’s commitment to long-form progressive journalism and commentary. We will add more original content, but we won’t transform AlterNet into Raw Story. Our intent in creating a separate company for AlterNet is to ensure AlterNet remains true to its roots.

Nor will you see any change in AlterNet’s commitment to social justice. AlterNet has a proud history in pioneering progressive journalism on the Internet, and an unwavering determination to spread the word on civil rights, drug reform, the environment and civic engagement.

Finally, you will continue to see content from longtime AlterNet contributors.

We look forward to an exciting shared future with you and are honored by the time you spend with us each day. Thank you for being part of the AlterNet community and letting us join you.

Sincerely,

John Byrne,

AlterNet Media
