MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace attempted to unpack the bewildering relationship between President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron Wednesday on her show "Deadline: White House."

She noted that while Trump and Macron seemed almost excessively friendly in their public appearances Tuesday, the French president's speech on Wednesday before Congress revealed that he is deeply critical of the U.S. president's governing philosophy. Macron denounced nationalism, international isolationism, and environmental neglect in his powerful speech.

Wallace called it a "striking rebuke of just about everything Donald Trump stands for. But it stood in stark contrast to yesterday's warm, touchy, personal diplomacy. Macron's takedown today begs the question: What was going on?"

The host also said that, when she served under President George W. Bush, she never saw any leaders conduct themselves so differently with regard to their foreign counterparts within a single visit.
