An off duty corrections officer in Florida is the latest person to have a gun accidentally go off and injure people.  According to the Florida-based Sun Sentinel, a gun went off inside a cafe, injuring nine people.

The bullet hit the metal base of a table, and then ricocheted off into customers.  The Miami-Dade Corrections officer, named Marcus Leon Thompson, told law enforcement that his gun went off when he reached for money and a valet ticket into his pocket, which also contained his gun.

The Sun-Sentinel reports that “the police reports list nine people who either felt a burning sensation or received small cuts from bullet fragments after Thompson's gun went off, including two staffers. A 79-year-old woman visiting from New Jersey was taken to Broward Health Medical Center with a small fragment in her buttocks.”

After the incident, Thompson handed his server money for the bill and went outside with his wife.  His server, after he figured out what happened in the cafe, told Thompson to wait for the police.

The name of the bar where the indicent happened is "Shooters Waterfront" and the irony isn't lost on the owner, who bought the business last week. But she says "this was an accident that could have happened anywhere."
