Fox News chief White House correspondent John Roberts criticized President Donald Trump on Friday for calling competing networks dishonest and 'fake news' during a U.K. press conference.

He directly condemned the president's use of the term "fake news" to inaccurately denigrate coverage he doesn't like.

"Something happened at the press conference that I think needs addressing. The president called out one of my colleagues Kristen Welker of NBC as dishonest and said that NBC New was dishonest. He also called out CNN as not a real network: "'fake news,'" Roberts said. "I know Kristen Wwlker. She's a friend of mine. She's as honest as the day is long. To call her dishonest is unfair."

Roberts also referenced his own previous role at CNN.

"I used to work at CNN. They have fine journalists there who risk their lives to cover the news around the world. To say that they are not a real network or 'fake news' is also unfair," he said.

Roberts made the remarks after initially being criticized for not immediately defending his fellow journalists when Trump called on him at the U.K. conference after insulting CNN.
