Bernie Sanders Sounds Off on Republicans Too Gutless to Face the Music on Trumpcare

The Vermont senator says it's no coincidence the GOP hasn't held one public hearing on the bill.

Amid the fallout from Donald Trump Jr.'s bombshell email release, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) issued a staunch warning on Republicans' looming health care bill, which is set to hit Trump's working-class voters the hardest

"Do not forget for a second the policies [Trump] is proposing are the most destructive policies being proposed in our lifetime," Sen. Sanders announced on Thursday's "Morning Joe."

The Congressional Budget Office predicted the previous version of the Senate bill would leave 22 million more Americans uninsured in a decade, much like the House bill passed in May.

"How many of those people will die, we don't know," Sanders warned. "Thousands of them will."

The legislation would cut Medicaid by nearly $800 billion by 2026, impacting approximately 15 million people.

"Last night I had a telephone conference town meeting with 15,000 Vermont people calling," Sanders told host Joe Scarborough, before discussing his recent rallies in states Trump won.

"I spent the last month going to Pennsylvania, to Kentucky, to West Virginia, to Ohio," said Sanders. "Republicans talk about rights and freedom and choice. Two and a half million women have chosen Planned Parenthood—that's gone. Older workers, Trump did well with older working-class people. You're an older worker making $40,000 a year, you're 60 years of age, your premiums will more than double."

Sanders went on to talk about cuts to nursing home care, two-thirds of which is paid for by Medicaid, which Trump repeatedly vowed not to cut

"On top of all of this... they want to give $500 billion in tax breaks, $200 billion to the wealthiest 2 percent," he added. "Every major health care organization in this country opposes this disastrous bill, and that is why the republicans have not held one public hearing on this. They don't have the guts to go forward, hear from the doctors and the nurses."
