President Trump's firing of FBI director James Comey has thrown his administration into a tailspin since the news broke this week—and that was before the president directly contradicted the White House during an interview with Lester Holt Thursday.

"Even putting aside the substance and the suspicious timing of the Comey firing (due to Comey's investigation of Trump), the optics of the last 48 hours have been a disaster," opened Seth Meyers in his Thursday "Closer Look."

"The day after Trump fired the man investigating him over his ties to Russia, Trump met with two top Russian officials (Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Russian Ambassador to the United States Sergey Kislyak) in the Oval Office, including one (Kislyak) who's been at the center of several damaging stories," he said.

Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer has reportedly been reduced to hiding in the bushes outside the White House.

"I wasn't in the bushes. I was merely among the bushes," Meyers mocked. "And when the White House is clarifying the press secretary's position in relation to bushes, it's important to remember, America is both among and in deep sh*t."

Since Tuesday, the White House has argued that Comey's firing was based on the recommendation of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein after the FBI director's mishandling of the Hillary Clinton e-mail investigation last fall.

But according to an NBC interview with Trump on Thursday, firing Comey was entirely his idea.

"Trump's ego is so huge," quipped Meyers. "He can't even let somebody else have the spotlight in his alibi."
