Family fun for one California family—firing at targets at their homemade shooting range—turned scary when their 7-year-old son suddenly clutched his chest and his Dad noticed he was bleeding. The boy was reportedly firing a single-shot, .22 bolt action youth rifle under his father's supervision. When the boy cried out, his father noticed there was a small hole in his shirt, then blood.

The boy's father rushed him to the local fire station, from which he was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center. According to Sacramento TV station KCRA, he is expected to survive.

El Dorado County Sheriff's Department deputies told KCRA they suspected the bullet richocheted off something, and it looks like the boy was hit by fragments. They do not think anyone was aiming guns at each other, or suspect any foul play.  Lt. Tim Becker told KCRA that the boy appeared properly supervised and the shooting range complied with safety standards. He saw nothing unusual about the incident at all. "Firearms are tools, and people get hurt by tools. Sometimes accidents happen," he said.

No mention of the fact that firearms are tools for killing, and that gun accidents all-too frequently kill or involve children.

Last week, a 9-year-old Arizona girl accidentally killed her shooting instructor with an Uzi.
