One of Trump's Biggest Boosters at Fox News Isn't Buying Donald Jr.'s Russia Story

Andrew Napolitano has been one of the Donald Trump's biggest boosters, so much so that the president praised him in May for having a "great legal mind." But even the Fox News columnist is having difficulty rationalizing the bombshell report by the New York Times detailing Donald Jr.'s meeting with a Kremlin-connected lawyer and a former Soviet officer.

“If I could have advised the president or Donald Trump Jr., I would have said, ‘Go to [Trump attorney] Don McGahn,'” Napolitano told Fox Business Network reporter Sandra Kaye Smith on Monday. “He would have said, ‘You want to talk to a an ex-KGB-GRU agent and a person represented as a Russian government lawyer—even though we now know she wasn’t—tell the FBI, don’t bring those guys in here."

The senior judicial analyst then issued a staunch warning to Trump voters eager to dismiss Don Jr.'s actions as inconsequential.

"It is a crime to receive something of value when you are a campaign official from a foreign person or foreign government," Napolitano explained.

According to Napolitano, Don. Jr. was lucky not to receive any information about Hillary Clinton from Natalia Veselnitskaya during their meeting.

"That would have been a felony," he concluded.

“Often these non-violent criminal events don’t happen all at once, they happen in stages,” he added. “Is this enough to commence a criminal investigation? Answer: yes. Because it is suspicious that they met with these people, that they didn’t consult a lawyer, that one of these people is former KGB-GRU — that’s the Russian intelligence arm.”
