Fundraiser to Rebuild Burnt-Down Mosque in Missouri Reaches Goal

An internet-based drive to fundraise for a mosque in Missouri that was burnt to the ground earlier this week has succeeded immensely. In two days, a campaign on IndieGoGo has raised over $270,000 to rebuild Joplin, Missouri’s only mosque.

The mosque was destroyed early Monday by a fire--the second fire in a little over a month to target the mosque. The first one, which has been deemed an arson attack, occurred on July 4. The suspect was caught on camera, but no one has been arrested yet.

The target of the fundraising campaign was to reach $250,000--and the amount raised exceeds that. The fast turnaround was aided by social media and posts like this Glenn Greenwald article that urged readers to donate.

Meanwhile, local churches have opened their doors to Joplin’s small Muslim community, which is now without a place to worship for the remainder of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month. An iftar, or the communal meal that breaks the daily fast during Ramadan, will be held at a local church next Wednesday.
