Whoopi Goldberg reminded some of her View co-hosts on Tuesday that NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick is not the first person to carry out political protests.

“People have been protesting—be they athletes who won gold medals, who stood on the podium and did this,” she said, raising her fist to reference Tommie Smith and John Carlos’ 1968 Summer Olympics protest. “The bitch about all of this is we’re still protesting the same thing. People find the ways that they can do it.”

Paula Faris, Candace Cameron Bure, and Sarah Haines accused Kaepernick of being “disrespectful” or divisive by refusing to stand for the national anthem during the San Francisco 49ers’ slate of pre-season games this season.
