The root cause of the turmoil in the Middle East is the unresolved Israeli-Palestinian conflict. President Barack Obama should use some of his enormous political capital and take immediate action to launch a major effort to resolve this crisis. This will involve getting Israel to give up most of its settlements on the West Bank, establishing East Jerusalem as the capital of the Palestinian state and getting an enforceable pledge from Hamas to stop attacks on Israel. President Obama must establish himself as an honest broker who can talk tough to both sides in these negotiations. A viable peace treaty must include both security for Israel and justice for the Palestinian people.
