Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie was met with significant backlash Friday over his criticism of ex-President Donald Trump, NBC News reports.
Speaking during a Republican event, the former governor and 2024 Republican candidate did not mince words towards his fellow presidential hopeful.
The crowd of conservatives booed Christie after he said, "I'm running because he's let us down" — referring to Trump.

He emphasized, "Trump has not assumed responsibility for his past mistakes," according to NBC, "describing him as a failed leader unfit to serve another term in the White House."
The former governor told the unmoved audience, "You can boo all you want," adding, "But here's the thing, our faith teaches us that people have to take responsibility for what they do. People have to stand up and take accountability for what they do."
The GOP leader's spokesperson told NBC in a statement Christie's "speech implored Christians to contrast their support of Trump with their faith," highlighting "a tweet in which" the former governor "urged fellow Republicans to 'stop hiding from the truth.'"
The spokesperson wrote, "Some of these tough truths were met with boos and others with applause, but every person will leave the conference with something to think about."
During his speech, Christie drew attention to Trump's past insults towards him, saying the MAGA hopeful "calls me names and belittles me," insisting, "Those kinds of things makes our country smaller."
