'What the Republicans want': Why Menendez's resignation would be 'worst case scenario' for Dems

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), during a Monday, September 25 interview with MSNBC's Jen Psaki, suggested that it would be a "good idea" for United States Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) to resign following his recent indictment on bribery and corruption charges.

During Monday's episode of The 11th Hour with Stephanie Ruhle on MSNBC, Ruhle askedNew York Times congressional reporter Luke Broadwater about his thoughts on Democratic leaders' like Pelosi's calls for the New Jersey leader to resign.

"Well, Nancy Pelosi's an extremely influential voice, still, on the Hill" Broadwater said. "I expect we're going to continue to see more and more Democrats call for Bob Menendez to resign. It's really a worst case scenario for Senate Democrats. They're already having a really tough time trying to hold the senate as it is. And having a sitting senator with an indictment like this hanging over his head in an election year is exactly what the Republicans want. It would be much better off for them politically if he were to step down. The governor, who's a Democrat, appoints someone...then that person could've the powers of incumbency going into the election. So, if Menendez insists on staying in office, which it sounds like he will, it sounds like he is dug in here, then I think they'll try to take him out with the primary."
